Amazon echo spot review: A perfect smart accessory for your bedside table

Amazon has expanded its range of Alexa-enabled devices in India with the launch of the Echo Spot, a new addition that blends the functionalities of a smart display and a smart speaker. Unlike other Echo devices, which primarily serve as speakers, the Echo Spot features a compact touchscreen that makes it ideal for use as a smart alarm clock with a customisable display. It combines both visual and voice-controlled functionalities, making it a unique accessory for your bedside table.

Design and display

The Echo Spot’s standout feature is its 2.5-inch circular touchscreen display, which serves as both a clock and a smart display. The device is designed to be visually appealing, with eight customisable clock faces, some of which even include weather details. Additionally, users can choose from six different colour themes: orange, violet, magenta, lime, teal, and blue. These clock faces and colours can easily be changed either directly on the device or via the Alexa app, available for both Android and iPhone users.

To adjust the clock face or colour theme on the Echo Spot, simply swipe down from the top of the device and go to the ‘Clock and Theme’ option in settings. If you prefer to use the Alexa app, select the Echo Spot from the device list, tap on settings, and choose your preferred options. The changes are reflected instantly on the device, ensuring a seamless and personalisable experience.

Display features

Beyond showing time and weather details, the Echo Spot enhances the user experience by displaying album art and graphic visualisations during audio playback. It allows easy control of music playback through on-screen buttons for play/pause, skipping tracks, or going back to the previous track. Volume adjustments can be made via physical buttons on the top of the device, or alternatively, users can simply use voice commands to control the audio settings.

The screen is equipped with adaptive brightness, which adjusts according to the ambient lighting of the room. The Echo Spot also features a night mode that dims the screen and shifts the colour display to red accents for a more soothing view during the nighttime, ensuring that it does not disturb your sleep.

Smart features

Equipped with an ultrasound motion sensor, the Echo Spot can detect presence and automate certain actions based on routines. For example, users can create a routine to turn on a lamp when motion is detected in the room. However, it’s worth noting that the Echo Spot lacks a temperature sensor, a feature found in other Amazon Echo devices like the Echo Dot, which could have made the device more versatile in providing contextual experiences.

As an Alexa-enabled device, the Echo Spot allows users to control smart home devices through voice commands. Once a command, such as “Alexa, turn on the bedroom lamp,” is issued, the Echo Spot will execute the action and display corresponding controls for the connected smart device. In this case, the display will show an on/off switch and a brightness slider, allowing users to adjust the lamp’s intensity directly from the screen.

Audio performance

While the Echo Spot has a front-facing speaker, the audio quality and loudness are not particularly suited for an immersive listening experience. The speaker’s sound quality is adequate for basic tasks such as providing verbal responses from Alexa or playing gentle background music, but it may not satisfy audiophiles seeking high-quality sound. The device’s speaker is sufficient for its primary function as an alarm clock and for Alexa’s voice prompts, but it’s not designed for serious audio enjoyment.

Verdict

Priced at Rs 8,999, with an introductory offer of Rs 6,449, the Echo Spot may seem expensive for a smart alarm clock. However, considering its unique combination of smart display and speaker features, it stands out as a useful and attractive addition to your bedside table. If you are looking for a versatile and compact device that serves both as an alarm clock and a smart home hub, the Echo Spot is a perfect choice.

Its customisable display, smart home integration, and simple yet effective design make it a compelling option for those looking to enhance their daily routine. While the audio performance is not exceptional, its other features and the ability to control your smart home devices with voice commands make it a useful and functional accessory. Whether you’re looking to add a touch of smart technology to your bedroom or simply need an efficient alarm clock, the Echo Spot delivers.
