Apple has begun manufacturing the entire iPhone 16 lineup, including the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, in India, the tech giant confirmed on October 4. This marks a significant milestone for the company as it expands its manufacturing presence in one of the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets. Along with this announcement, Apple revealed plans to open four new retail stores in India, further strengthening its foothold in the country.
The upcoming stores are set to open in key metropolitan cities, including Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai. These will add to the two flagship stores Apple launched earlier this year in April, located in Saket, Delhi, and Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai. While the company has yet to specify an exact timeline for the opening of these new stores, the announcement signals Apple’s commitment to expanding its retail and operational footprint in India.
Manufacturing iPhone 16 series in India
Apple’s journey in India began in 2017, with the company initially focusing on the production of older iPhone models for the local market. Over the years, Apple has steadily increased its manufacturing efforts, with newer models being produced closer to their global launch dates. For example, India-made iPhone 13 models reached international markets only a few months after their debut in 2021. By 2022, with the iPhone 14 series, this gap was reduced to less than two weeks.
However, it was not until the launch of the iPhone 15 series that India-made models were available on day one, though production was initially limited to the base models, including the iPhone 15 Plus. Now, for the first time, Apple is manufacturing the entire iPhone 16 lineup in India, including its high-end Pro models. This move is expected to reduce Apple’s reliance on China for production and is seen as part of the company’s strategy to diversify its supply chain.
The India-made iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are already available to Indian customers from the day of launch. With local production now including the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, Apple is poised to capitalize on the growing premium smartphone market in India, where the brand has seen increasing demand.
Apple’s expanding detail presence in India
In addition to ramping up manufacturing, Apple is also focusing on enhancing its retail experience in India. The company’s two existing stores in Delhi and Mumbai have already been met with enthusiasm from Indian consumers. Now, Apple is looking to bring its iconic retail experience to more cities, with new stores planned for Bengaluru, Pune, Delhi-NCR, and Mumbai.
“Our stores are incredible places to experience the magic of Apple, and it’s been wonderful to deepen our connection with our customers in India,” said Deirdre O’Brien, Apple’s senior vice president of Retail. She added, “We’re thrilled to build our teams as we plan to open more stores in India because we’re inspired by the creativity and passion of our customers across this country.”
These new stores will offer Indian consumers the opportunity to explore Apple’s full range of products and services in a premium, hands-on environment. Apple has long been known for its exceptional customer service and personalized shopping experiences, and the new stores will further enhance this experience for Indian buyers.
Apple’s growing workforce in India
Apple’s expansion in India is also creating significant employment opportunities. The company currently employs over 3,000 people across India, including those working in its retail operations. With plans for new stores and increased manufacturing, this number is expected to rise in the coming years.
Earlier this year, Apple also inaugurated a new office in Bengaluru, Karnataka, spanning 15 floors. This office will accommodate up to 1,200 employees and includes state-of-the-art facilities such as lab space, collaboration areas, wellness zones, and a Caffe Macs. The new office underscores Apple’s long-term commitment to India, both as a manufacturing hub and a key market for its products.
Looking ahead
Apple’s decision to expand its manufacturing and retail presence in India comes at a time when the country is emerging as a critical market for tech companies. With its rapidly growing middle class and increasing demand for premium smartphones, India offers immense growth potential for Apple. The company’s local manufacturing efforts not only help meet domestic demand but also position India as a key player in Apple’s global supply chain.
As Apple continues to invest in India, both in terms of production and retail, the tech giant is poised to solidify its position as a leading brand in the country, while simultaneously reducing its dependence on China and diversifying its global operations.
