Google has rolled out a new reverse phone search feature, called Lookup, within the Phone app for Pixel smartphones. This feature, part of Pixel’s June Feature Drop update, allows users to identify unsaved numbers directly from their call log without needing third-party apps. The reverse lookup tool is aimed at providing a seamless way to search for unknown numbers, especially those linked to businesses or publicly available databases, simplifying the user experience.
Google lookup: How it works
The Lookup feature is integrated into the Google Phone app. When users receive an incoming call from a number that is not saved in their contacts, they can expand the options visible on the screen. Alongside other functions such as adding the number to contacts, sending a message, or viewing call history, the new Lookup button will also be available.
By tapping the Lookup button, the phone number is automatically entered into Google Search along with the country code, making it easier to identify the caller. Users no longer need to copy and paste the number manually into a search engine after switching apps. This efficient feature saves time and enhances convenience, especially when trying to identify spam calls or legitimate business contacts.
Supported pixel devices
The Lookup feature is available for Pixel 6 and newer Pixel models, including the recently released Pixel Fold. This means that all Pixel phones with Google’s Tensor chip will be able to access the reverse phone search tool. While Google has not specified whether older Pixel models without Tensor chips will receive the feature, the current release focuses on its latest generation of devices.
The feature, currently included in the beta version (132) of the Google Phone app, is expected to roll out widely in future updates. Users running this version of the Phone app on supported devices may already have access to Lookup, though the exact timing for its full release to all Pixel users remains unclear.
Public database-linked numbers only
It’s important to note that the Lookup feature is designed for numbers that are publicly available, such as business phone numbers listed in directories or other online databases. The feature does not work for personal phone numbers that are not publicly linked to any business or organization.
This limitation ensures that the feature complies with privacy guidelines while still offering value to users who frequently deal with unfamiliar business numbers. The ability to quickly identify unknown callers could be especially useful for small business owners, professionals, and frequent travelers, as well as anyone looking to avoid spam or fraudulent calls.
Seamless server-side update
Google has made it clear that users do not need to manually update their Phone app or device to the June Feature Drop or latest security patch to access Lookup. The feature is being deployed as a server-side update, meaning it will automatically become available on eligible devices without requiring intervention from the user.
First launched in Japan
Interestingly, the Lookup feature was first launched exclusively for Pixel users in Japan before making its way to other markets. The early release in Japan allowed Google to test the functionality and iron out any issues before expanding the feature to a global audience.
With the addition of the Lookup feature, Google continues to enhance the Pixel experience by making it easier for users to manage and identify unsaved phone numbers. This functionality eliminates the need for third-party apps and provides a streamlined, user-friendly solution directly within the Pixel ecosystem. As the feature gradually rolls out to more devices, it is expected to become an essential tool for users looking to manage their call logs more efficiently and avoid unwanted calls.
