A Guildford gaming festival organiser has highlighted a significant shift in the industry, with increasing numbers of women joining both as players and developers.
Lauran Carter, co-organiser of the Guildford.games festival, noted that more people were recognising gaming as an exciting and viable career path, with over 4,000 attendees expected at the event on Friday.
Ms Carter remarked that while the gaming sector had become highly competitive, there were still ample opportunities for those looking to establish a career in the field.
The sold-out festival, designed for players, developers, and aspiring industry professionals, is set to bring thousands to G Live on London Road.
A growing presence of women in gaming
Reflecting on the transformation of the industry, Ms Carter said: “When I first started out, I would manage communities where the ratio was 90% male and only 10% female.”
She added, “In the last 10 to 15 years, that has shifted dramatically, and now it’s closer to a 50-50 split, if not leaning more towards women in some cases.”
She attributed this change to growing awareness of the vast opportunities gaming presents as a career. “Everyone has realised it’s a fantastic industry to be part of,” she said. “It’s competitive, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for new talent.”
A platform for developers and aspiring talent
Since its inception in 2019, Guildford.games has provided a platform for networking, discussions, and industry insights. The festival features expert panels, developer showcases, and opportunities for those looking to break into gaming to present their work.
Ms Carter explained that this year’s event has been structured into two segments: a developers’ summit, tailored to experienced industry professionals, and the main festival, which will place greater emphasis on supporting budding developers.
An exciting line-up of talks and panels
This year’s schedule includes discussions on a range of topics, from the intricacies of gaming music to the development of management simulation games, such as Two Point Hospital—a game where players oversee the operations of a virtual healthcare facility.
The festival’s expansion reflects the growing demand for insight and mentorship within the gaming industry. By fostering an inclusive and encouraging environment, the event aims to support both newcomers and seasoned professionals in navigating the dynamic landscape of game development.
With a strong focus on diversity and innovation, Guildford.games continues to cement its place as a key event for gaming enthusiasts and professionals alike. The festival not only celebrates the industry’s evolution but also underscores the increasing recognition of gaming as a serious and rewarding career choice for all.
