Roscosmos, Russia’s space agency, has announced plans to build a new orbital space station by 2030, with the first slot launching in 2027. The station will contribute 4 modules by 2030 and six by 2033. This happens when Russia prepares to leave the International Space Station (ISS) program in 2028. The new station will allow Russia to conduct scientific research and technological development without the limitations of the ISS.
The project has been consented to, and the schedule includes flight-testing a new fastened spacecraft and building rockets and earthbound infrastructure. Russia has a great history of space exploration but has faced upsets in recent years, including a failed lunar mission in 2023. The new space station is seen as a way for Russia to back its position in space exploration.
Meanwhile, NASA is handling issues related to Boeing’s Starliner capsule, which is currently stranded at the ISS with two astronauts in agreement. Despite numerous problems, NASA has appreciated Boeing for getting the astronauts to the ISS securely. The mission was originally pre-planned for 10 days but has been expanded indefinitely as NASA works to fix the issues and back the astronauts safely.
Steve Stich, NASA’s Commercial Crew Program manager, has said that the agency is modernizing the limit for the Starliner’s crew module batteries, which were originally thought to be a concern for the mission. The Starliner is technically rated to stay in orbit for up to 210 days, but the mission has already been expanded beyond its original 10-day plan. The batteries are being recharged by the ISS, and the danger is considered low.
Overall, Russia’s upcoming space station project and NASA’s issues with the Starliner capsule mention the challenges and complications of space exploration. Despite these challenges, both countries have vowed to advance their space programs and push the boundaries of what is possible in space.
