Tim Cook shares how Apple watch saved his father’s life after fall

In a rare personal revelation, Apple CEO Tim Cook opened up about a life-saving experience involving his father and the Apple Watch, which Cook believes helped save his father’s life. During a recent interview on the Table Manners podcast with Jessie and Lennie Ware, Cook shared insights into his daily routine, work ethic, and personal interests, as well as a touching story of how Apple’s innovative technology played a critical role in a family emergency.

Cook, who typically keeps his personal life private, recounted his upbringing in a small town in Alabama, where he was taught the value of hard work from an early age. Reflecting on his childhood, Cook recalled working his first job at 14, flipping burgers for $1.10 an hour, and how this early exposure to work instilled a lifelong sense of discipline. “I’ve been working since I was 11 or 12,” Cook revealed, adding that his paper route was the start of his strong work ethic. Today, he continues that same drive, beginning each day before 5 am to get a head start on work before the demands of the day take over.

Cook’s mornings are dedicated to email correspondence, where he finds the quiet hours to respond to messages, many of which come from Apple employees and customers sharing how Apple products have impacted their lives. Among the many stories Cook receives, one particularly resonated with him on a deeply personal level. He shared how the fall detection feature of the Apple Watch had alerted emergency services when his father fell at home alone.

“He didn’t respond to the door, so they kicked the door down — and it was a good thing they did because he was not conscious at the time,” Cook explained, describing the alarming situation. His father’s fall was a traumatic event, but thanks to the Apple Watch’s automatic fall detection, emergency services were notified and were able to reach him in time. Cook fondly recalled that when his father regained consciousness and was aware of the events, his main concern was not his health, but the fact that his door had been kicked in. “He was focused on the door, to be honest. He was more upset, ‘They kicked out my door!’” Cook laughed, adding a lighthearted touch to an otherwise serious moment.

While his father might not have fully appreciated the technology that saved him, Cook highlighted the importance of the Apple Watch’s safety features in helping to protect loved ones. The incident served as a reminder of how technology can have a profound impact on real-life situations, not just through convenience but through life-saving capabilities.

The conversation also touched on how the COVID-19 pandemic reshaped work culture, particularly at Apple. Cook reflected on the transition to remote work and the challenges of finding a balance between flexibility and collaboration. Apple’s approach to hybrid work now requires most employees to work in the office for at least three days a week, while Cook himself goes in four days. While he acknowledged the benefits of remote work, Cook admitted that an empty office can often feel “depressing,” underscoring his belief in the value of in-person collaboration for creativity and team morale.

Despite his busy schedule as the leader of one of the world’s most valuable companies, Cook also enjoys the simpler things in life. An avid hiker, he enjoys visiting national parks, often finding time to explore nature as a way to recharge. When it comes to food, Cook is a fan of seafood and enjoys dining at Ethel’s Fancy in Palo Alto, where he often orders octopus. He also revealed his love for dark chocolate and Chardonnay, adding that his dream last meal would consist of hamachi crudo, branzino, broccolini, and a decadent chocolate dessert.

Throughout the interview, Cook’s humble approach to life and work shone through, as he reflected on both his personal and professional journey. From his early days of flipping burgers to leading one of the most influential companies in the world, Cook’s story is one of resilience, innovation, and the power of technology to change lives. The Apple Watch, as he revealed, is not just a tool for convenience but a symbol of the company’s commitment to improving safety and well-being in unexpected ways.

This personal account of how the Apple Watch saved his father’s life is a poignant reminder of the incredible potential of modern technology to make a real difference in people’s lives, further cementing Apple’s role in shaping the future of personal health and safety.
