In Hamburg, a significant police operation took place when a man armed with an axe threatened officers near a Dutch football fan zone. He also tried to ignite a petrol bomb, as stated in BBC News.
The incident occurred near a fan zone for supporters of the Dutch football team at around 12:30 local time (10:30 GMT). There is video footage of the incident as well on social media. The video shows the man wielding an axe Infront of police officers.
The initial police statement said that a man threatened them with a pickaxe and an “incendiary device”
Police officers initially used pepper spray before they shot and seriously injured him.
He is currently receiving medical attention.
The incident is not believed to be related to the Euro 2023 match between the Netherlands and Poland, which took place in Hamburg on Sunday.
“We are assuming that this is an isolated case, which means it is not football-related,” police spokeswoman Sandra Levgruen said.
The suspect’s identity and motivations remain undisclosed by the authorities.
Gary Rose, BBC Sport Journalist, who is also in Hamburg, stated that match preparations were going as planned.
The match continued without disruption, maintaining a good atmosphere among fans.
