Tourists in Yellowstone National Park experienced an unexpected hazard on Thursday when their automobile drove off the road and into the Semi-Centennial Geyser. According to the National Park Service, the vehicle with five occupants became completely submerged in nearly 9 feet (2.75 meters) of hot water.
All five people managed to escape the submerged automobile and were taken to a nearby hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The National Park Service halted both sides of the road near the accident site for almost two hours on Friday to allow the vehicle to be removed from the geyser.
The Semi-Centennial Geyser, known for its acidic nature and surface water temperatures of around 105 degrees Fahrenheit (40.5 Celsius), is one of the park’s many thermal features that pose a risk to visitors. Yellowstone has about 10,000 hydrothermal features, including hot springs, geysers, mud springs, travertine terraces, and fumaroles, making it the world’s geyser hotspot.
The event is being investigated, emphasizing the importance of caution when navigating the park’s distinctive and sometimes perilous landscape.
