Israel bombed a school, killing at least thirty Palestinians. At least 30 people have died in an Israeli airstrike, the fourth in as many days, at a school in southern Gaza that houses displaced Palestinians.
At least 53 people were injured when an attack on the al-Awdah school entrance occurred in the town of Abbasan, east of Khan Younis. Among the victims, according to Palestinian doctors, were mostly women and children.
The strike was carried out on Tuesday, according to the Israeli military, to hit a “terrorist from Hamas’s military wing” that was close to the school. It revealed that it has struck three more Gaza schools that were being used as shelters since Saturday.
“Since the war began, two-thirds of UNRWA schools in Gaza have been hit, some were bombed out, and many were severely damaged,” said Philippe Lazzarini, Director of UNRWA, the organization that works with Palestinian refugees.
“Schools have turned into overcrowded shelters that frequently end up a place of death & misery for children, taking away from them safe places of education and hope,”
According to the Gaza Ministry of Health, 16 people were killed after an Israeli strike struck the al-Jawni school in Nuseirat, in the heart of the enclave, on Saturday. 2,000 people, according to UNRWA, were taking refuge there at the time. Home for civilians who have been displaced in Khan Younis.
Four people were killed in a hit on the Holy Family school in Gaza City the next day, according to the civil defense organization in Gaza.
The school’s proprietors, the Latin Patriarchate, claimed that hundreds of people had flocked to the premises at the time.
On Monday, a second school in Nuseirat, run by UNRWA, was targeted. According to a nearby hospital, multiple patients were admitted for care.
Lazzarini demanded a quick truce, saying that “the blatant disregard of international humanitarian law cannot become the new normal.”
Hamas has warned that the stepped-up Israeli offensive could jeopardize mediated ceasefire talks, with another round taking place on Wednesday in Qatar.
