“Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy… collapsed around 5 am,” say authorities, reported by The International News.
The ceiling of a recently renovated terminal installation at New Delhi’s international airport partially destructed in heavy rains early Friday, killing one person and hurting eight others, rescuers claimed.
Photos uploaded online showed vehicles collapsed under big steel girders at the airport’s Terminal 1 departure forecourt. This was one main project Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched in March before the country’s general election.
The terminal is employed for national flights only, and airport governances claimed all flights departing from it were delayed until early afternoon.
“Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy… collapsed around 5 am,” they claimed in an online statement.
“Emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected.”
Several terminals were employing as normal, as were arrivals at Terminal 1, it claimed further.
New Delhi had been clashed by severe rains in previous days as the annual monsoon approached the Indian capital.
“Eight people have been injured, and one person is dead. Rescue operations have been completed,” Atul Gard, director of Delhi Fire Services, said AFP.
