In a bold move to streamline U.S. government operations, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has announced that Tesla CEO Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy will head a newly formed Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). The department’s mission will be to overhaul the federal bureaucracy, reduce excessive regulations, and eliminate wasteful spending within the government. Trump emphasised that DOGE represents a “revolutionary approach to government” that he hopes will reshape the federal structure as part of his “Save America” movement.
“I am pleased to announce that the Great Elon Musk, working in conjunction with American Patriot Vivek Ramaswamy, will lead the Department of Government Efficiency,” Trump announced on Tuesday. “Together, these two visionary Americans will dismantle bureaucratic inefficiency and radically reduce waste throughout our federal agencies.”
Ramaswamy’s appointment as co-lead of DOGE makes him the first Indian American tapped by Trump for his incoming administration. Known for his strong entrepreneurial background and previous presidential candidacy, Ramaswamy is expected to play a significant role in delivering the “efficiency revolution” Trump has promised. Trump praised both Musk and Ramaswamy as the ideal team to modernise the government, blending Musk’s technological prowess with Ramaswamy’s business acumen.
In his statement, Musk expressed enthusiasm for the task ahead, remarking, “This will send shockwaves through the system, especially to those accustomed to government waste—which is a lot of people.” Musk’s participation in the project is likely to draw upon his experience in transforming private sector enterprises and will bring an innovative, tech-oriented perspective to government operations.
The president-elect compared the scope of DOGE’s mission to that of the historic Manhattan Project, underscoring the department’s ambitious goals. “The Department of Government Efficiency will be one of the most transformative initiatives of our time,” Trump said, describing it as a “Manhattan Project for government reform.” The department will reportedly be advised by experts from outside government and will collaborate with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) to carry out comprehensive structural reforms. This initiative, Trump noted, aligns closely with the GOP’s long-standing objective of shrinking the federal government and enhancing its accountability to taxpayers.
Trump outlined the long-term vision for DOGE, stating that it would “liberate the economy” by making government operations more transparent and efficient, with benefits felt by all Americans. He further confirmed that the department’s work is scheduled to conclude no later than July 4, 2026, marking a significant moment in U.S. history as the nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. “A smaller government with more efficiency and less bureaucracy will be the perfect gift to America on this milestone anniversary,” Trump declared. He expressed his confidence that Musk and Ramaswamy would succeed in delivering a “leaner, more effective government.”
Beyond DOGE, Trump also announced the nomination of Fox News host and U.S. Army veteran Pete Hegseth as his Secretary of Defense. Hegseth, 44, is a popular figure among conservatives and has built a reputation as a staunch advocate for American military personnel. In making the announcement, Trump praised Hegseth’s commitment to the U.S. armed forces and his unwavering dedication to the “America First” foreign policy stance.
“Nobody fights harder for the Troops,” Trump said, “and Pete will be a courageous and patriotic champion of our ‘Peace through Strength’ policy.” Trump described Hegseth as “tough, smart, and a true believer in America First,” adding that with Hegseth leading the Department of Defense, “America’s enemies are on notice.” The appointment of Hegseth signals Trump’s determination to maintain a strong defence posture while prioritising the well-being of military personnel and veterans.
Hegseth, who has previously served as an Army officer and Fox News contributor, has long been an advocate for issues concerning veterans and military reform. Known for his outspoken views, he has been a vocal supporter of a robust defence policy and is expected to reinforce Trump’s vision of “peace through strength.”
Trump’s recent announcements reflect a larger vision to reshape the federal government in his image: smaller, more accountable, and focused on efficiency and military strength. The DOGE initiative, spearheaded by Musk and Ramaswamy, will be a cornerstone of this vision, aiming to bring about unprecedented reform in how government operates. With Hegseth at the Department of Defense, Trump’s administration is set to underscore its priorities for national security alongside economic and bureaucratic efficiency.
As the U.S. prepares for Trump’s second term in office, these appointments suggest a determined focus on curbing waste, reducing federal overreach, and strengthening national defence. The task set for DOGE and the newly nominated Secretary of Defense encapsulates Trump’s approach to governance—one that seeks to balance assertive defence policies with innovative public sector reforms. The success of these initiatives will shape Trump’s legacy and impact how future administrations approach government efficiency and national security.
