A devastating road accident in Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh, claimed five lives and left four others injured on Sunday. The tragic incident occurred at the Gauri Nagar intersection in the Mallawan Kotwali area when a car and a bus, both returning from separate wedding processions, collided head-on.
Details of the accident
The collision involved a car travelling back from a wedding procession in Kanpur and a bus returning from a similar event in Baghauli. According to Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) East, Nripendra Kumar, the impact resulted in the death of five individuals, while four others sustained injuries.
“The accident took place at the Gauri Nagar intersection. Five people have died, and four have been injured,” Kumar confirmed in a statement to ANI.
The injured were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment, and the bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examinations.
Police action
Local police arrived swiftly at the scene upon receiving information about the accident. Officials ensured that relief efforts were carried out without delay, admitting the injured to a nearby hospital for urgent care.
“Police acted immediately upon reaching the scene, ensuring that the injured were provided timely medical attention. Fortunately, none of the injuries are life-threatening,” a police spokesperson reported.
Chief Minister’s response
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to those injured. In a press release, he instructed the district administration to ensure that the injured receive all necessary medical treatment.
“The Chief Minister has taken cognizance of the tragic incident and has directed authorities to provide comprehensive medical care to those injured. Relief efforts are also being monitored closely,” the statement read.
Context of the tragedy
The accident highlights the increasing road safety concerns on Uttar Pradesh’s highways, where heavy traffic and inadequate road infrastructure often lead to fatal incidents. Wedding processions, a frequent occurrence in the state, see vehicles travelling long distances late at night or in the early hours, often increasing the likelihood of fatigue-related accidents.
This particular collision comes as a grim reminder of the importance of adhering to traffic safety regulations and the need for infrastructural improvements in accident-prone areas.
Similar Incident on Yamuna expressway
In a separate road mishap earlier the same day, eight people sustained injuries when a canter hit two cars on the Yamuna Expressway. The incident occurred on the Agra to Noida route in Gautam Buddh Nagar district. While the injuries were reportedly minor, the accident added to the series of road mishaps recorded over the weekend.
Growing concern over road safety
The back-to-back accidents underscore a broader concern about road safety in Uttar Pradesh and other parts of India. The state has witnessed an alarming number of fatal road accidents in recent years, many of which have been attributed to overspeeding, poor visibility, and failure to adhere to traffic laws.
Authorities have been urged to prioritise measures such as installing speed cameras, improving road signage, and conducting awareness campaigns about the dangers of reckless driving.
As investigations into the Hardoi accident continue, the tragic loss of lives has left the community in mourning. The prompt response by police and medical teams, along with the Chief Minister’s directives, has ensured immediate relief to the affected families. However, the incident serves as a sombre reminder of the urgent need for improved road safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
Further updates on the investigation and relief efforts are awaited.
