Two French rugby players, Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, have been charged with raping and physically assaulting a 39-year-old Argentine woman in a hotel room in Mendoza, Argentina. The alleged attack happened after a match between France and Argentina. The woman states she was raped multiple times and beaten, resulting in severe injuries to her face, back, breasts, legs, and ribs. She was hospitalized due to her injuries and has been receiving treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The players refuse the accusations, stating that sexual relations existed by consent. However, the woman’s lawyer, Natacha Romano, has forced the severity of the violence and the need for justice. Romano has also pointed out that the woman’s body bears evidence of the violence, contradicting the players’ claims of consent. She allegedly tried to escape many times.- ‘The violence was fierce’.
The players were arrested and transferred to Mendoza, where they will be formally charged. They face potential condemns of 6-15 years, which could increase to 20 years if found guilty of exasperated sexual assault. The French Rugby Federation has replaced the players for the upcoming match, and the incident has highlighted outrage and sadness in both France and Argentina.
The investigation is continuing until complete, with witnesses and camera footage being reviewed. The players’ lawyer, Rafael Cuneo Libarona, has stated that witnesses and camera footage suggest the woman left the hotel without visible injuries. However, Romano has emphasised that the woman’s injuries were severe and that she was held against her will.
The case has shown concerns about sexual abuse and consent, with many calling for swift action and support for the victim. As the investigation unfolds, the rugby world and beyond await the result, which expects that justice will be served.
