This article is that NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), a military alliance formed in 1949, has highlighted its 75th anniversary and has made progress over the years to address new security challenges, enlarging its membership and changing according to new global circumstances.
A military alliance, NATO, formed in 1949, mentions its 75th anniversary. Initially, 12 countries, including the US, Canada, and Western European nations, united to counter the Soviet Union threat. With time, NATO expanded to thirty-two members, including previous Soviet states, Poland, Sweden, and Finland. The union accounts for nearly one billion people and 50% of the world’s GDP, with 3.2 million military employees.
NATO’s purpose has evolved from keeping the Soviet Union far from the world and the US to summoning new security complications. The alliance has only prompted its collective defence clause one at a time, after the 9/11 attacks. NATO has been involved in several military interventions and many other scientific innovations, including Afghanistan and Kosovo, where its longest-running mission, KFOR, remains established.
Members desire to spend at least 2% of their GDP on defence, a purpose raised after Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022. As a founding member, France withdrew from NATO’s military command structure in 1966 but reunited in 2009. Emmanuel Macron, the French President, has been important to NATO, calling it “brain dead” in 2019, but later addressed its revival after Russia invaded Ukraine.
NATO has undergone many waves of enlargement, including the addition of Nordic neighbours Sweden and Finland. The union has also been involved in the Balkans, with a 25-year-long mission in Kosovo. No country has ever withdrawn from NATO. As the alliance celebrates its 75th anniversary, it remains an important military alliance for its member countries, adjusting to new threats and complications.
