The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia declared that it had prevented a terrorist attempt to target an Orthodox Christian church in Maykop, the North Caucasus region’s capital.
The suspect, a national of an unidentified Central Asian nation, intended to attack the church, kill the ministers and security personnel, and then set the structure on fire.
Materials linked to an international terrorist organization that is prohibited, a dagger, and parts for an incendiary device were all seized by the FSB.
This incident takes place against a backdrop of increasing Islamist violence in the area, which includes recent simultaneous attacks on police checkpoints and religious facilities that have left 22 people dead, as well as a deadly attack in March that the Islamic State has claimed.
Many suspects, mostly natives of Tajikistan, have been detained by the authorities and are presently awaiting trial.
