Iran’s acting foreign minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, revealed to the Etemad daily that Iran is still in indirect nuclear negotiations with the United States through Oman.
“Indirect talks are being conducted through Oman but the negotiation process is confidential and its details cannot be recounted,” Bagheri Kani was quoted as saying.
The goal of these private discussions is to prepare the way for the upcoming transition of power in Iran in a few weeks.
This comes after a White House spokeswoman stated that under President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian, who favors a practical foreign policy and lowered tensions with the six nations engaged in the 2015 nuclear agreement, the United States is not prepared to resume direct nuclear discussions with Iran.
However, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei maintains ultimate authority over foreign policy, warning against reliance on American favor.
Pezeshkian’s tenure begins amidst heightened Middle East tensions due to the Israel-Hamas conflict and cross-border hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, with Iran reiterating its support for Palestinians and the Axis of Resistance factions.
