A 28-year-old Irish air stewardess, Tori Towey is caught in Dubai facing jail time after reportedly suffering domestic violence and attempting to take her own life. She works for Emirates Airlines in the UAE and has been prohibited from leaving the country. Tori’s family and advocacy group in Dubai are calling on Dubai authorities to give up the charges and lift the travel ban, allowing her to return to Ireland.
Tori states that her South African husband attacked her with a knife and punched her, causing many bruises and injuries. She tried to take her own life after the attack and was taken to a police station. Despite her ordeal, Tori is facing charges of alcohol consumption and attempted suicide, which could lead to a higher prison sentence in a jail known for human rights abuses and violence.
CEO of Detained in Dubai, Radha Stirling, has summoned Dubai authorities to urgently drop the charges against Tori and lift the travel ban. Stirling noted that the UAE has stimulated alcohol as legal, but people are still regularly charged with alcohol consumption and possession. Tori’s proceedings have been increased in the Irish Parliament, with Premier Simon Harris and Sinn Fein President Mary Lou McDonald vowing to intervene.
Tori’s aunt, Ann Flynn, claimed her niece as a “beautiful young woman” who is “fun-loving and loved to travel.” The family is prompting the Irish government to help secure Tori’s release and return to Ireland. The Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that it is aware of the case and is offering consular assistance. The case has enchanted concerns about human rights abuses and violence in Dubai’s prisons. Tori’s next court hearing is on July 18, and her family is anxiously waiting for a positive result.
