A disastrous Hurricane Beryl has struck Jamaica. It formed earlier than usual in the hurricane season. It was just a tropical depression but after 42 hours, it transformed into a major hurricane causing destruction everywhere, as quoted by BBC News
It damaged several buildings, and trees fell and ripped off the roofs/ It brought winds of up to 130mph which is calculated as 215km/h.
The streets got poured down by floodwater with some areas experiencing rainfall reaching 12 inches (30cm)
Along with the destruction, the Hurricane resulted in deathroll as well. At least 7 people died across the Caribbean.
In the Southern St Elizabeth Parish, resident of a rural farming community. named Amoy Wellington quoted to Reuters News Agency
“It’s terrible. Everything’s gone. I’m in my house and scared,” “It’s a disaster.”
Government officials started awaking people regarding the seriousness of the issue, Prime Minister Andrew Holness encouraged people to take the situation seriously
“If you live in a low-lying area, an area historically prone to flooding and landslide, or if you live on the banks of a river or a gully, I implore you to evacuate to a shelter or to safer ground,” he said.
The hurricane has been downgraded from a category four to a category three storm. But the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicts up to seven major hurricanes in the North Atlantic this year
