Kami Rita has climbed to the summit of Mount Everest for the 30th time, a record for a Nepali Sherpa guide. This fantastic feat was accomplished only ten days after his record-making 29th summit on the 12th of May, 2024.
Rita, 54, reached the 29,032-foot (8,849-metre) peak at 7:7:49 pm local time on Wednesday said Khim Lal Gautam, a Nepalese government representative at the base camp. He was in perfect health and great mood when he got to the top.
Rita’s father was one of the first paid Sherpa guides with the opening of MT. everest to foreign climbers in 1950. His brother Lakpa Rita has also climbed Mount Everest 17 times.
Rita, aged 48 years in 2018, holds the record for the most summits on Mount Everest having climbed the mountain 22 times in her career. He has since improved his record several times; the most recent being on May 22, 2024.
Rita is the holder of the record for the most successful ascents to the 8,000-metre peaks, having done it 40 times. Apart from his Everest successes, he has done Cho-Oyu eight times, Lhotse once, and K2 once.
Although the profession is fatal since 118 Sherpas were killed while working between 1921 and 2018, Rita has no intentions of retiring until his body cannot carry him through the climbing anymore. He has promised to be back at Everest next year and for at least one or two years more.
More than 500 climbers have successfully climbed Mount Everest from the Nepalese side in the present climbing season which is expected to end soon. Everest and other Himalayan peaks are predominantly climbed in April and May because the weather is most suitable for climbing during these two months.
