Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced measures to relieve congestion on Karachi’s main roadways by moving heavy traffic to the Lyari Expressway. This statement was made during a meeting with senior officials from the National Highway Authority, Karachi Port Trust, and Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) on Friday.
Wahab underlined the importance of maximizing existing infrastructure to manage the city’s growing traffic. He stated that Karachi’s roadways are straining to handle the constant pressure of heavy traffic and advocated redirecting heavy cars to the Lyari Expressway, pending a positive third-party report.
The discussion, held at KMC headquarters, covered a variety of topics related to making better use of the Lyari Expressway. Wahab emphasized the urgent need to regulate traffic on Karachi’s key roadways owing to rising congestion.
He emphasized that allowing heavy traffic on the Lyari Expressway will greatly alleviate the pressure on other major routes while improving overall traffic flow.
The mayor further stated that heavy traffic moving through various parts of the city has a significant impact on neighborhoods from Mauripur to Landhi, resulting in traffic jams on roads such as Mauripur Road, M.T. Khan Road, Sunset Boulevard, Korangi Road, and the Jam Sadiq Bridge. These delays not only squander important time, but they also have a negative environmental impact.
Wahab continued by emphasizing the significance of quickly resolving these traffic difficulties, with a third-party study on the feasibility of using the Lyari Expressway for heavy traffic expected by Thursday.
