William Ruto, Kenyan President, has expressed regret for the egotism and richness shown by the ruling party parliamentarians and ministers. He also vowed to take action against rogue police officers who fired unarmed civilians during protests against the tax march. According to the Kenya National Commission for Human Rights, the protests, which started on June 18, recorded 39 deaths.
Ruto admitted faults done by officials and took responsibility, vowing change in their conduct. He summoned the nation on social media platform X, hosted by influencer Osama Otero, who was arrested and abused by police during the protests. Ruto was sorry about the incident and vowed prosecution of those proceedings.
The president made known austerity measures to take action against corruption and poor governance, constituting 47 state corporations, hanging 50 chief administrative secretaries, and withdrawing support for the offices of the first lady and partners of the deputy president and prime Cabinet secretary.
Ruto faced a lot of criticism for not showing sympathy and not highlighting the names of those who passed away during the protests. He answered by saying people are born differently but desired to speak with the mother of a boy who was shot by the police and killed. The president was also charged with not knowing the accurate number of deaths, initially recording 25 while the Kenya National Commission for Human Rights reported 39.
Young people took part in the online engagement addressed to the president to discharge competent government ministers, which Ruto vowed to do in an upcoming reorganization. The president’s regret and desires aim to address public concerns about government arrogance, police cruelty, and corruption, which have cursed Kenya.
Overall, Ruto’s desires aimed to ensure Kenyans that he carried out improvement and accountability, following weeks of trouble and widespread condemnation of his government’s hold of the protests.
