Bishkek, May 22, 2024 — Due to an extreme series of violent mob attacks in various cities, over 4,000 Pakistani students are expected to leave Kyrgyzstan. Ensuring safety and evacuation for the affected students increases violence and has urged immediate action from both Pakistani and Kyrgyz authorities.
Last week violent vandalises of the properties and physically assaulting Pakistani nationals has sparked widespread fear among the student community. According to the reports, these incidents are part of a broader wave of xenophobic violence that has recently intensified in the region.
For the safety of citizens, Pakistani officials have deeply expressed concern. The Pakistani Embassy in Bishkek has done great work to facilitate and speed up the evacuation process. Also facilitated transportation and ensured the emergency flights so that students could safely return to Pakistan.
A spokesperson of Pakistan Foreign Ministry said “We are in constant contact with the Kyrgyz authorities to ensure the protection of our students and to arrange their safe passage back home.” He further added, “The safety of our nationals is our top priority.”
Kyrgyz Government condemned the attacks and promised to take stringent measures so that they can restore order and protect foreign nationals. Kyrgyz Ministry of Interior said, “We are committed to ensuring the safety of all students and foreign nationals in Kyrgyzstan.” Further added, “The perpetrators of these heinous acts will be brought to justice.”
Despite these efforts and support, fear among the Pakistani students remains high. Sorrowful experiences have been shared by various students. Some of them said that they just want to go back home safely.
The evacuation process is long, and it continues. The Pakistani Government to the Kyrgyzstan communities requesting support to ensure safety.
