The Metropolitan Police are appealing for witnesses after a 78-year-old woman tragically passed away a week after collapsing on a bus in Finchley.
The incident occurred on Saturday, 28 December, at approximately 12:35 pm on a route 13 bus travelling along Finchley Road. The elderly woman had just boarded the bus when she suffered a cardiac arrest, leading to her collapse.
Emergency response
Emergency services, including officers and the London Ambulance Service, were swiftly dispatched to the scene. The woman was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition but sadly succumbed to her illness the following Saturday.
Her family are being supported by a specially trained officer, and police have extended their condolences during this difficult time.
Investigation underway
Officers are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. The bus driver is cooperating fully with the inquiry, and police have confirmed that no arrests have been made at this stage.
Detectives are keen to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident, particularly passengers on the bus who may have left before officers arrived at the scene.
Witness appeal
The Metropolitan Police have urged anyone with information to come forward. Witnesses or individuals who were on the bus at the time are asked to contact the police by calling 101 or messaging ‘X’ @MetCC, quoting reference CAD2686/28Dec.
A police spokesperson stated:
“We are committed to understanding the circumstances of this tragic event and would appreciate the assistance of anyone who witnessed what happened or has relevant information.”
Community response
Local residents have expressed their sadness at the news, with many offering their condolences to the woman’s family. The route 13 bus is a well-used service in the area, and the incident has raised concerns among some about the need for additional support for elderly passengers travelling on public transport.
One Finchley resident commented:
“It’s heartbreaking to hear about this. Public transport is a lifeline for so many older people, and I hope the investigation provides answers for her family.”
Guidance for witnesses
The police have reassured the public that providing information, no matter how small it may seem, could be invaluable in piecing together the sequence of events. Witnesses are reminded that they can share information anonymously via Crimestoppers if preferred.
The authorities hope that by reaching out to the community, they can gather a clearer understanding of the moments leading up to the incident and offer closure to the family of the deceased.
Safety on public transport
The incident has sparked renewed conversations around safety measures for vulnerable passengers on London’s transport network. While cardiac arrests are often sudden and unpredictable, some campaigners have suggested increased access to defibrillators on public transport could make a difference in life-or-death situations.
A Transport for London (TfL) spokesperson extended their sympathies to the woman’s family and pledged cooperation with the ongoing investigation. They reiterated their commitment to ensuring passenger safety across the network.
Moving forward
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on gathering witness testimonies to provide clarity on what transpired that day. The community is urged to support the police in their efforts to bring understanding and resolution to this tragic case.
For anyone who may have information, your cooperation is encouraged to help the authorities with their enquiries.
