President Joe Biden has restored his position, saying that he will not pardon his son Hunter Biden in the case he is convicted of a felony in his ongoing gun trial.
The trial concluded on June 11, 2024, when Hunter Biden was convicted on all three felonies relating to his failed attempt to purchase a firearm in 2018 while suffering from a severe addiction to narcotics. Later on, in an interview at ABC News, Biden promised that he would abide by the verdict of the trial and also stated that he would not be pardoning Hunter either.
This decision is even more striking as it differs from the position of the former President of the United States of America Donald Trump who refused the statements on the election fraud during his first impeachment trial and stated that if he received another chance, he would take quite a harsh revenge and try to become a president again.
It is viewed as one of the ways through which the President showed that he would support the rule of law principles and the judgment of the jury. Hunter Biden may get up to 25 years in prison, but first-time offenders are less likely to get the maximum sentencing.
The sentencing date has not been established, and defense counsel for Hunter Biden has suggested that they should be appealing. President Biden has also disapproved of Trump’s efforts to subvert the US legal system; he has argued that Trump was given a fair trial and that the jury did not conspire to give a particular verdict.
The President has been supportive of his son’s trial by the Senate, and this has received support from his family members, especially the First Lady Jill Biden, who was in most of the trial.
