Stars gather in Leicester square for the sci-fi comedy from Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho
Robert Pattinson, Naomi Ackie, and Mark Ruffalo were among the stars who graced the red carpet in London tonight for the highly anticipated premiere of Mickey 17. The sci-fi comedy, directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Bong Joon Ho, is set to hit cinemas on 7 March 2025 and is based on the 2022 novel Mickey7 by Edward Ashton.
The event, held at Cineworld Leicester Square, drew fans and film enthusiasts eager to catch a glimpse of the cast and celebrate what promises to be a visually stunning and thought-provoking cinematic experience.
A night of style and glamour
Robert Pattinson, who plays the lead role of Mickey, made a striking entrance in a deep navy blue suit with a modern, slightly oversized silhouette. The Batman star exuded effortless charm as he posed for photographers, greeting fans and signing autographs.
Mark Ruffalo, who portrays antagonist Kenneth Marshall in the film, opted for a classic black blazer paired with a crisp white button-up shirt, keeping his look sophisticated yet understated.
Naomi Ackie, known for her role in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, turned heads in a striking black asymmetrical top featuring sculptural detailing, paired with high-waisted black trousers. With her hair styled in a sleek, slicked-back updo, she brought an air of elegance to the evening.
What is Mickey 17 about?
Mickey 17 follows the story of Mickey (played by Pattinson), a human sent on a mission to colonise a distant planet. However, after dying during an exploration mission, he is brought back to life as a clone—a process that is part of his role as an “expendable.”
Unlike previous iterations, this new version of Mickey retains memories of his past lives, leading him to question his existence and uncover the deeper, more sinister truths behind the mission. With a blend of dark humour, psychological intrigue, and sci-fi spectacle, the film explores themes of identity, mortality, and humanity’s future in space.
The film also boasts an impressive supporting cast, including Toni Collette, Steven Yeun, and Holliday Grainger, adding further depth to Bong Joon Ho’s latest ambitious project.
Bong Joon Ho returns to sci-fi
South Korean director Bong Joon Ho has become a powerhouse in international cinema, gaining widespread recognition for his 2019 film Parasite, which won Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards.
He is no stranger to the sci-fi genre, having directed Snowpiercer (2013), a dystopian thriller set on a perpetually moving train, and Okja (2017), a thought-provoking film blending science fiction with environmental themes.
Speaking about his latest project, Bong Joon Ho described Mickey 17 as “a deeply human story told through the lens of science fiction and satire,” teasing a unique mix of existential questions, cutting-edge visuals, and unexpected humour.
Robert Patterson’s continued evolution
Pattinson, who gained worldwide fame as Edward Cullen in The Twilight Saga, has since built an impressive career in independent and big-budget films. From his critically acclaimed performances in Good Time (2017) and The Lighthouse (2019) to his portrayal of Bruce Wayne in The Batman (2022), Pattinson has consistently chosen roles that challenge expectations.
Beyond his career, Pattinson is engaged to actress and singer Suki Waterhouse, and the couple welcomed their first child together earlier this year. However, they have kept their daughter’s name private.
Excitement builds for the film’s release
With a stellar cast, a visionary director, and a blend of sci-fi, comedy, and philosophical depth, Mickey 17 is already one of the most talked-about films of 2025.
As fans eagerly await its release on 7 March 2025, tonight’s London premiere has set the stage for what could be another major success for Bong Joon Ho and Robert Pattinson.
