A daytime missile strike launched by Russia on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia claimed the lives of at least 13 civilians and left approximately 30 others injured on Wednesday, according to Ukrainian officials. The attack, a grim reminder of the ongoing war, targeted residential areas and caused widespread devastation.
Footage shared by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on his Telegram channel revealed harrowing scenes of civilians lying injured amidst debris-strewn streets. Emergency services were shown treating the wounded and transporting them on gurneys.
Aerial bombing targets residential areas
Russian forces began their assault in the mid-afternoon, deploying glide bombs that struck residential buildings in the city, according to regional Governor Ivan Fedorov. He had issued a warning minutes before the attack, highlighting the imminent danger of high-speed missiles and glide bombs.
The brutality of the aerial bombing was underscored by Zelenskyy, who called it a calculated act of terror. “There is nothing more brutal than aerial bombing of a city, knowing that ordinary civilians will suffer,” he wrote on Telegram.
In response to the tragedy, Fedorov announced that Thursday would be observed as a day of mourning across the Zaporizhzhia region.
Zelenskyy urges global support
Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Zelenskyy called for serious security guarantees from nations seeking peace in the region. He expressed concerns that any ceasefire or peace agreement could provide the Kremlin with an opportunity to regroup and rearm unless Ukraine’s future defence is assured.
“To be honest, I believe that we have a right to demand serious security guarantees from the countries that aim for peace in the world,” Zelenskyy said.
His remarks followed comments by US President-elect Donald Trump, who had suggested understanding Russia’s opposition to Ukraine joining NATO. Zelenskyy pointed out that nations such as the United States, Germany, Hungary, and Slovakia have slowed Ukraine’s immediate entry into the 32-member alliance. NATO has stated that Ukraine is on an irreversible path to membership, but no concrete timeline has been provided.
Ukrainian counterstrike deep inside Russia
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian military launched a counterattack, striking a fuel storage depot in Russia’s Saratov region. The depot, located near Engels and roughly 600 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, supplies a critical Russian air base used for launching missiles into Ukraine.
Ukraine’s General Staff confirmed the assault, noting that the attack had caused a massive blaze. “The damage to the oil base creates serious logistical problems for the strategic aviation of the Russian occupiers and significantly reduces their ability to strike peaceful Ukrainian cities and civilian objects,” it said in a statement.
The Saratov region’s governor, Roman Busargin, acknowledged that an industrial plant in Engels sustained damage from falling drone debris, but reported no casualties.
This counterattack underscores Ukraine’s growing capability to strike deep into Russian territory. Kyiv has been developing domestically produced long-range missiles and drones, despite restrictions on the range of Western-supplied weaponry.
Impact on Russian operations
Engels, a city of over 220,000 people, has strategic importance due to its location on the Volga River and its industrial base. It also hosts the main base for Russia’s nuclear-capable bombers, which has been a target for Ukrainian drone strikes since the early stages of the war.
In response to the attack, Russian authorities restricted flights at multiple airports, including those in Saratov, Ulyanovsk, Kazan, and Nizhnekamsk.
The strikes have embarrassed the Kremlin and disrupted Russian logistics, further complicating their military operations.
A continuing tragedy
As Europe’s largest conflict since World War II rages on, civilians remain the primary victims of relentless aerial assaults. The war, which began on 24 February 2022, has claimed thousands of lives and displaced millions.
The Zaporizhzhia attack is yet another reminder of the human cost of the conflict. It also highlights the growing tension between Russia and Ukraine, as both sides continue to escalate their strategies in a bid to gain the upper hand.
With no immediate resolution in sight, the international community is left grappling with the challenge of finding a path to peace that safeguards Ukraine’s sovereignty while addressing the broader geopolitical implications of the war.
