Most days, the River Seine is dangerous to swim in due to high levels of E. Coli bacteria, according to official data.
From June 3 to July 2, there were 30 days in which the E. Coli levels at the Alexandre III Bridge, the site of the triathlon events, were higher than what was considered acceptable.
Athletes who have elevated E. Coli levels run a major danger of illness; if the levels are higher than 1000 CFU/100 mL, the swimming leg of the triathlon may have to be cancelled.
Because of the improved weather, authorities have seen an overall increase in the quality of the water. Antoine Guillou, the deputy mayor, voiced confidence in the Seine’s Olympic preparedness.
Next week, Mayor Anne Hidalgo intends to show the safety of the Seine by swimming in it, claiming that the water will be “depolluted.”
Elevations of E. Coli are increased by rainfall events. For instance, after rain on June 30, the levels rose to almost 2000 CFU/100 mL, which is double the standard for “good” water quality.
Although they are confident in the city’s efforts to improve water quality, the organizers of Paris 2024 are nonetheless wary because of the possibility of unseasonal weather events.
If conditions allow, the Olympic opening ceremony is scheduled for July 26 on the Seine. Strong currents from heavy rain forced the cancellation of a recent practice.
