A union Israeli strike on Damascus has injured 8 Syrian soldiers and caused material losses, according to Syria’s state-run SANA broadcaster. The strike, which happened on Thursday evening, targeted a site on the outskirts of Damascus and was launched from the Golan Heights in northern Israel.
The building targeted was reportedly used by Syrian security forces, but the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights states that it has been used by Hezbollah as a detention center since 2014. This protest is the 1st in Syria since an April 1 airstrike accused of Israel, which killed 7 Revolutionary Guards and levelled a building Iran said was a delegation.
Iran promised revenge for the strike and launched a direct missile and drone attack against Israel on April 13-14, which Israel successfully defended against. The recent strike comes amid increased tensions between Israel and Iran, with several rocket launches carried out against Israel from southern Syria in recent months.
Israel has answered with strikes on Hezbollah targets and has given a warning it will not tolerate the terrorists’ continued presence on the border. The situation has highlighted concerns of an all-out war between Israel and Iran, with world leaders stimulating restraint.
The strike sparked Israel’s ongoing efforts to secure Iran from supplying arms to its proxy Hezbollah, which has stepped up attacks on northern Israel in recent months. The tensions have led to a surge in military activity in the region, with both sides exchanging blows and warnings. The Israeli military has blamed Iran and Hezbollah for attempting to establish a presence in Syria and has promised to prevent this from occurring.
The incident has raised concerns about the potential for a wider dispute in the region, with the US and other countries urging calm and restraint. The situation remains volatile, with both sides dug in and determined to assert their interests.
