Uk, May 29, 2024:The ONS announced that the total net migration to the UK for the year ending in December 2023 was 685,000 as against 764,000 in the prior year, 2022, now revised upwards to 783,000 on a more detailed dataset, a decrease of 10%.
The number of people entering the United Kingdom and then leaving it is referred to as the net migration figure. An approximate figure for the number of persons who came into the country in 2023 is 1.22 million, while 537,000 were destitute.
Over 100,000 persons came to the UK on compassionate grounds, such as those fleeing Ukraine and Hong Kong, nonetheless. The ONS cautions against interpreting this falling number as triggering a new decline in population movement, citing a lack of enough evidence to support this fact.
The number of people who moved to the UK last year for work increased, which was the leading cause of migration. This was instead of coming for studies as had previously been the case. From 277,000 in the year ending December 2022, non-EU immigration for work reasons rose to 423,000 in December 2023.
Even after the 10% drop, net migration remains higher than it has ever been in the United Kingdom while being part of the subjects that are expected to ignite debates during the forthcoming general elections. Recently, some new government initiatives have been enforced towards enhancing migration control within the nation, though this has not been realized as per the most recent data.
